Guide to natural baby essentials

Date Posted:13 May 2018

A baby’s skin is incredibly delicate, and it takes time for the skin and immune system to build up its natural defenses. This is why commercial soaps, shampoos, and lotions can often lead to contact dermatitis and eczema in your little one. The red and often painful skin that can be seen in so many infants and children can be significantly reduced simply by using natural baby care products

Organic baby shampoo and wash

It is important not to use harsh cleansers on a baby’s skin, as the protective layer has not yet developed. It takes around 3 years until the skin is fully developed, which is why babies are much more prone to infections and skin irritation. It can be difficult to read through confusing ingredients in order to figure out if a product is completely natural, and labels can often be misleading.  By choosing certified organic & natural baby wash and shampoo, you can be certain it is free from harmful and irritating chemicals.

Natural baby lotion

A lotion is not always needed after bathing your baby, but in times of dry skin or nappy rash, a natural baby lotion can help to repair and soothe the skin. An organic baby lotion which contains lavender can assist in aiding sleep, while calendula containing lotion is a wonderful anti-inflammatory for irritated skin.

Talc-free baby powder

Talc is a mineral used to make talcum powder, however, research suggests talc found in commercial baby powders may actually be harmful. This is due to some natural talc sources containing asbestos, and the potential to breath in talc particles which can increase the risk of lung cancer.  Using a baby powder can help to reduce nappy rash by absorbing moisture and reducing irritation. The good news is, you can buy talc-free powder such as tapioca baby powder.

Natural baby wipes

Baby wipes are essential for any mum, but they can contribute significantly to waste and landfills, along with unnecessary chemicals. Using natural biodegradable baby wipes are much kinder to both the earth and your baby. To learn more about baby wipes, see our earlier post Toxins in baby wipes

Organic baby toothpaste

When you think about how much toothpaste your baby accidentally swallows, it's a no-brainer to strictly use organic baby toothpaste. Natural baby toothpaste comes in a variety of yummy flavours, and you can be at ease knowing it's ok if they accidentally swallow a little bit of it. Most supermarket toothpaste contains fluoride and if you are ok with that, that is completely fine. If you are unsure of fluoride effects, we encourage you to read our earlier post What are the effects of using fluoride containing toothpaste long term?

Natural bug repellent

Chemicals contained in insect repellents can irritate sensitive baby skin. Using a natural insect repellent for babies ensures your little one stays safe from toxins and bugs. Mosquito bites are itchy and can be very upsetting for infants, however, using a natural mosquito repellent will help to stop the bites. By coating the skin with essential oils that repel bugs, insects stay away and do not bite, as they dislike the taste of certain oils such as citronella. The great thing about a natural insect repellent is that it doubles as an anti-itch formula. Lavender and witch hazel often contained in natural bug repellents can soothe itchy skin and reduce redness.
